Inspiring Living Room Colours
Living rooms are our most used rooms in the house, so when you are choosing a colour scheme it is important to
get it right. This month we will look at some great living room colour combinations and get useful decorating
tips from Deborah Bibby - the Editor of Real Living magazine.
Expert Tip
Deborah Bibby - editor of Real Living, one of Australia’s favourite decorating magazines and author of a
well known design blog: http://reallivingmagazine.blogspot.com
“If you feel a little unsure about what colours to paint your living room
remember there is nothing wrong with neutrals. This also opens up the concept of introducing great accent
colours in your accessories – think canary yellow and blue, they are gorgeous together. So, if you go with
a neutral choice there are a few rules to keep in mind: Ensure that you choose at least two shades so it’s
not too bland, a good tip is to paint the ceiling and the architraves half strength of the walls or pure white
for a crisp look that pops against the
beige/neutral tone. You could also choose a complementary tonal contrast for even more interest. A palette of
beige, taupes and whites can create a classic timeless décor that is also inexpensive to update.”
Adding Warmth to Whites
Using white doesn’t necessarily result in a stark, soulless room.
By using different shades and textures of whites on your walls and in your furnishings, you can achieve a
liveable sophisticated space.
Use natural timbers to add warmth to your scheme and metallic accessories to add another dimension through gloss
and reflective surfaces.
Accent Combinations
The combination of using deep purples and yellow based greens as accents in a room gives a wonderful result.
Here the room has been anchored by using a dark charcoal shade on the floor as a rug and a soft purple shade on
the walls.
